    OK, it may not be a science at all - but there are plenty of approaches out there to make SOME kind of guess as to how easy or difficult.

    What is SEO Keyword Density

    When it comes to SEO, keyword density is a topic that often arouses much debate and discussion.

    It's something we're frequently asked about in our Content Support service and I can't count the number of times we've been asked what the ideal keyword density is for a web page (or article or blog post).

    This is an extremely difficult question to answer because there are so many factors involved when determining keyword density for your website.

    Here is an explanation of how Google calculates its rankings, direct from their Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines , which give some insight into why they use such a complex algorithm:

    "Websites may exhibit good rankings for a variety of reasons. Some sites may be well designed with information logically organized and available with clear and comprehensive navigation. Good use of keywords throughout the website, including page and title tag as well as headings and links can improve these factors."

    In other words, Google takes into number of variables when it calculates its search results for queries from users.

    These include the content on each web page, how frequently users click on that page in response to seeing it listed in their search results, etc., etc...

    Because there are so many variables involved with determining keyword density, we have no choice but to conclude that Google's algorithm looks at a lot more than just one number or word count because too many variables would result in a very messy and inaccurate algorithm.

    The most prevalent misconception we come across with regards to keyword density is the idea that if you want higher rankings (for example, ranking on page one of Google), you should try to "stuff" your keyword phrase into as many places on the page as possible.

    So what you would do is look at exactly where Google says its top-ranking web pages have their keywords, and use that same text for your own web pages. Take a look at this example:

    When you Google "learn SEO", Google ranks Moz , in the number one spot even though only 6% of the article is actually about keyword density!

    The reason why? Because it's relevant to people who are searching for information on keyword density, so if you were looking for an article on how to determine your website's keyword density, this is the page you would click on.

    Moz ranks number one for the keyword phrase "learn SEO"not because of their specific keyword density, but because they understand how to attract click-throughs from search engine users looking for information on "keyword learn SEO".

    The relevance of Moz's blog post is what draws people into clicking on it. That relevance - not the fact that Moz happened to use the same exact keywords.

    What is SEO Keyword difficulty

    Keyword difficulty is a metric used to gauge the competition level for any keyword search.

    The higher the number, the higher percentage of websites competing in order to appear on top of SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

    Imagine what it takes to rank for keywords such as "insurance" or "credit score".

    With so many people doing their research online, it's no wonder why these are some of the most competitive keywords out there.

    Keyword difficulty can be measured using an SEO keyword tools.

    Some tools use methods like external link analysis, pagerank and amount of results indexed by Google while other tools may use more complicated algorithms to calculate it out.

    There are many different online SEO tools that can calculate this key metric. A popular keyword difficulty tool is used by Moz, a well known authority in the SEO community.

    Another excellent keyword difficulty checker is provided by SEMrush . It calculates the competition level for any given search term and it's actually very easy to use.

    Let's see how much competition there really is for these two terms:

    Insurance = 72-98 out of 100

    Credit Score = 61-88 out of 100

    This means that these are relatively high competition keywords that most likely have a higher level of competition.

    This is simply just one metric among dozens used to determine how competitive it will be to rank for any given keyword phrase.

    It's important to remember that you can't look at just one or two metrics when trying to gauge how difficult it will be, but rather view the big picture with all metrics in mind.

    1 = Easy: keywords with no more than 20.

    2 = Moderate: keywords with no more than 40.

    3 = Difficult: keywords with no more than 60.

    4 = Very difficult: keywords with more than 60+.


    The scores here (1-4) come from a keyword difficulty rating tool that SEOmoz uses to help people get an idea of how hard it is to rank for different search terms.

    On the face of things you would think that the higher the rating the more difficult it will be for you to rank your site in organic listings at Google for this term because there are so many other sites already doing so - but alas not all is straightforward in Google Land!

    There's one big problem with looking at just these numbers though - and that's that the number of pages ranking for a given term is only one factor in the mix.

    For example, SEOmoz's definition of what makes a keyword "moderate" or "difficult" are based on using their own internal tool to check how many pages are ranking for that term - but they don't tell you anything about the number of keywords these pages are ranking for!

    And this is Google so being ranked for more than 3,000 different search terms is probably going to be pretty hard even if there are just 2 or 3 other sites in your niche outranking you at Google.

    For example,

    if I'm doing the math correctly then an average site will have around 30 keywords ranking within Google SERPs (5 page 1 rankings + 20 results per SERP * 10 results per page on average)

    So, the next time you are wondering about keyword difficulty for a term make sure you don't confuse the number of pages competing with the number of keywords that these pages rank for.

    Don't get caught out by thinking that if there are only 300 other sites competing then it's easier to rank - because they may be ranking for more than 3,000 different search terms!

    Even if their individual rankings are not that high this can still be really difficult to compete against.

    The problem is even worse when dealing with long-tail words because there will be fewer pages ranking in the SERPs for these terms.

    So, you would expect it to be easier to rank for them than head or short tail keywords (of which many more are competing).

    But again thinking in terms of just sites outranking you in Google is not always correct - some of these pages may only rank for a few different search term variations so the number of results on page one could be very high.

    How does the density of search results play a role in keyword difficulty?

    According to MOZ: Not very. But it is an additional factor that should be considered.

    One possibility could be measuring one's visibility across all platforms and mediums including social media and discoverability through your target audience.

    Say your post makes sense to rank for this term in Google but you are also able to build offsite equity by sharing the post to relevant subreddits and other communities.

    The more you share, the better your chances of finding an audience that legitimately resonates with both your product or service and the content you are creating.

    This could be a good thing for SEO but it's also dependent on having the right relationships to begin with.


    Bottom Line :

    Let's say there are 300,000 other sites competing on page 1 against a new site it might be very hard to get your brand-new site ranked unless you have a huge marketing budget to compete with. That makes keyword difficulty a really complex topic and it really is worth spending some time analyzing your niche further using MOZ Scores (an alternative KW Difficulty tool).

    It's also worth making sure that no matter how competitive a term may seem based just on the numbers of pages outranking you in Google SERPs there aren't actually many more terms they are ranking for (especially longer tail terms which can be even tougher). I guess the main thing it all comes down to is why you are doing this in the first place - if it's because you want online success then you need to do some careful planning.

    If it's simply because you want a quick win or something to add quickly to your site so you can start ranking for other, bigger keywords than forget about the long tail and other such nonsense and go get yourself ranked for all those head terms that hundreds of other sites are competing against!
