Starting from the financial year 2022-23, the Government of India plans to issue e-passports to the people.

This information was given by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan in the Rajya Sabha.

The e-passport will be a hybrid paper and electronic passport with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna as an inlay in the back cover.

Document 9303 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) specifies the document and the properties of the chip.

In this direction, e-passport will now replace the traditional passport to bring more ease to the individuals.

You may not believe this information right now, but in future it will be true.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the government plans to start issuing e-passports to residents in 2022-23.

Muraleedharan answered a question in the Rajya Sabha on the government's plan to issue e-passports in the calendar year 2022 and its details.

    How will e-passport

The e-passport will be a hybrid paper and electronic passport with an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna embedded in the back cover as an inlay.

According to Muraleedharan, important information of the passport will be printed on its data page as well as saved in the chip.

Document 9303 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) describes the document and the properties of the chip.

As per the administration it will be released in only 7 days instead of normal 15-20 days.

An e-passport at first glance appears to be similar to a normal passport.

An e-passport, on the other hand, is equipped with a small electronic chip, similar to the one found on a driver's license.

Microchip saves all the information on your passport including your name, date of birth, address and other personal information.

The microchip will assist immigration counters in quickly verifying a traveler's information.

This action will also help in reducing fake passports in the market.

The chip is said to have improved security mechanisms that make it impossible for fraudsters to tamper with the saved data.

Simply put, biometrics is a metric that is tied to physical characteristics.

This information should be one-of-a-kind, and may include your eyes, fingerprints, face, and other features.

Fingerprint and facial recognition features on smartphones are two of the most common examples of biometric technology that most of us use on a daily basis.

These security elements validate your identity using your unique physical characteristics.

    E-passport will be manufactured here

According to Muraleedharan (NIC), the Ministry of External Affairs has entrusted the technical duty of issuing e-passports to the National Informatics Centre.

"India Security Press, Nashik will prepare e-passport," he said.

Letters of Intent have been issued by the press for the purchase of 4.5 crore ICAO-compliant electronic chips and their operating systems.

Now the sample of e-passport is being analyzed.

With the completion of the technical eco-system and infrastructure, full scale manufacturing and distribution will begin.

    Benefits of an e-Passport

    1. Passengers with e-passport need not queue for long duration as it can be scanned in few seconds.
    2. It tracks biometric data of people.
    3. As a result, data theft and creation of duplicate passports will be prevented.
    4. The chip will fail if the passport authentication is tampered with.
    5. No one has the ability to erase data from it.
